He is known as the â€Å"Father of Science Fiction.† He began studying in biology and soon wrote novels on the Darwinian theory. Wells is known for his haunting and unpredictable stories. He adored it so much that he dreamt about it, but would only wear it once a week. His mother let him wear the suit as long as the buttons were covered in tissue so they wouldn’t tarnish. The boy was attentive to the buttons and saw them getting duller, which caused him anxiety. On night, when the moonlight shined through the window, the boy finds the urge to put the suit on. He tears all of the tissues and protective items off. He hurries out of his house and into his mother’s garden in the suit. He runs carelessly through the garden letting the thorns rip the jacket. He then runs into the duck pond and swims around. After swimming in the pond, he sees a moth and lets it fly around his head. He chases it and falls into a pit without noticing. The next morning, he is found dead at the bottom of the pit. Wells, a young man loves a suit that his mother sews for him. He loves this suit so much, he wants to wear it all the time. His mother however insists he keep the suit safely packed away until his wedding day. It was green and gold and woven so that I cannot describe how delicate and fine it was, and there was a tie of orange fluffiness that tied up under his chin. And the buttons in their newness shone like stars. He was proud and pleased by his suit beyond measure, and stood before the long looking-glass when first he put it on, so astonished and delighted with it that he could hardly turn himself away. The boy loved his suit so much that he dreamt about it. He would often take the suit out of it’s storage and admire it. His mother allowed him to wear the suit on Sundays to church, but with tissue covering the buttons so they wouldn’t tarnish and tacked on protective guards on the elbows and cuffs so they wouldn’t tear. Whenever the boy would peek at the buttons under the tissue wrap, he would notice they were becoming duller and duller, and this would cause him anxiety. One night he sees the moonlight shining into his bedroom and he gets out of bed with an urge to put the suit on. He makes up his mind to tear off the protective tissue and guards off the suit. Thought joined on to thought like things that whisper warmly in the shadows. Then he sat up in his little bed suddenly, very alert, with his heart beating very fast and a quiver in his body from top to toe. He had made up his mind. He knew now that he was going to wear his suit as it should be†¦

Reaction Paper Essay

On-the-job training (OJT) is a form of training taking place in a normal working situation.On-the-job training, sometimes called direct instruction, is one of the earliest forms of training (observational learning is probably the earliest). It is a one-on-one training located at the job site, where someone who knows how to do a task shows another how to perform it. In antiquity, the kind of work that people did was mainly unskilled or semiskilled work that did not require specialized knowledge. Parents or other community members, who knew how to do a job necessary for survival, passed their knowledge on to the children through direct instruction.OJT is still widely in use today. In fact, it is probably the most popular method of training because it requires only a person who knows how to do the task, and the tools the person uses to do the task. It may not be the most effective or the most efficient method at times, but it is normally the easiest to arrange and manage. Because the tr aining takes place on the job, it can be highly realistic and no transfer of learning is required. It is often inexpensive because no special equipment is needed other than what is normally used on the job. The other side is that OJT takes the trainer and materials out of production for the duration of the training time. In addition, due to safety or other production factors, it is prohibitive in some environments. On-the-job training, also known as OJT, is teaching the skills, knowledge, and competencies that are needed to perform a specific job within the workplace and work environment. On-the-job training uses the regular or existing workplace tools, machines, documents, equipment, knowledge and skills necessary for an employee to learn to effectively perform his or her job.It occurs within the normal working environment an employee will experience on the job. It may occur as the employee performs actual work or it may occur elsewhere within the workplace using training rooms, training work stations, or training equipment. On-the-job training is most frequently supplied by another employee who can competently perform the job that he or she is teaching.On-the-job training is occasionally performed by an external provider as in the case of specialized equipment. In another example, a vendor trains a marketing system a group of employees is adapting to their own work procedures. While the goal of OJT is often to teach basic workplace skills, it also instills aspects of the workplace culture and performance expectations in the new employee. OJT is also the approach  organizations use to provide new employee onboarding information.On-the-job training is normally the most effective approach to training employees. Here are your 12 best opportunities and methods for providing on-the-job training to employees. Importance of On the Job Training On the job Training are part of a college curriculum that aims to train and orient students about the work and their future career. OJT is very important not only to teach students their chosen career but to show students the reality about working. On the Job Training is very important and should not be taken for granted, here’s why: Aside from the high evaluation grade that you will receive from the employer, the employer may absorbed or offer you a job after graduation. Your background OJT experience is very important when applying a job. Employers often asked about the OJT experience and how it is related on the job that you are applying for. The OJT experience that you have can land you a great job. Especially in Media related jobs, most employers often asked and require an OJT experience from a media company. For instance, a news writer who is applying in a TV Network has great advantage if he/she has an OJT experience in a Media company like TV, Radio or Publishing. Your superior in the company that you are working for as an OJT may recommend your skills to the company affiliates or to other company that he/she knows. OJT will be your training ground. If you still have no idea on what is meant to be a worker, OJT will give you at least 10% of career realities. The company that you are currently applying in often makes a background check to successful applicants. If you have included your OJT adviser or employer in your character references, the company may contact them to ask information about your skills and knowledge as their student or intern. You can consider your OJT experience as your guide on your first days at work, especially if your OJT and current work are related. You can use your experience and observation as an OJT to your current job if you still have issues on adjustments . Most students have taken their OJT for granted; not realizing the importance it can bring on their future career. Having a good performance during OJT is very important especially now that there’s a tight competition towards job seekers and the high qualification of companies. On the job training or OJT is one method by which students is given achance to apply the theories and computations that  they have learned from theschool. It also helps the students to acquire relevant knowledge and skills byperforming in actual work setting. Colleges and universities require their studentsto undergo such training within a specific number of hours as part of thecurriculum. For the students, an OJT or internship program provides opportunities togo through the actual methodologies of a specific job using the real tools, equipments and documents. In effect, the workplace becomes a developmentvenue for a student trainee to learn more about his chosen field and practicewhat he has learn from academy. On the other hand, an effective OJT program also benefits the companieswho accept trainees. First OJT or intern provides additional manpower for alesser labor cost than a regular employee. Most of them are all eager to learn theropes so chances are high that they will cooperate.Employers can use this internship strategy as a method in recruiting newemployees. Since the trainer or the supervisor can follow the trainees’ progress,he can gauge based on performance, behavior and attitude if the trainee willmake a good recruit after the completion of his OJT’s can bring fresh ideas into the organization. Given the opportunity tospeak their minds freely and without fear, they maybe able to contributesignificantly in brainstorming sessions or research and eventually help improvethe organizations productivity. While training the interns, employers are in factalso teaching their employees to process of guiding the trainees stretches their patience, develops teaching skills and makes them more sensitive to the needsand mind set of the younger generation. The course of supervision also teachesthem how to share what they know and be receptive to questions. Hence, theinternship also becomes an avenue in training for future managers of thecompany.Accommodating on-the-job trainees can truly be beneficial not only to thetrainees but also to the companies that provide opportunities for this type of learning. There is wisdom in the front lines. Such training can be an investmentthat will be valuable to the company later on. This is also why trainees shouldtake their internship seriously as it can become a powerful tool and possibly evena source of recommendation when they take that big lift from being students tocareer professionals.

Megacities in Asia - City report Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Megacities in Asia - City report - Essay Example Tokyo’s population growth has been influenced by the availability of jobs that lure Japanese citizens to move in to work in the industries. Despite the city’s area being 0.6% of total Japan landmass, the city holds approximately 10% of total japan population. The large population in the city makes Tokyo the most densely populated prefecture in Japan. However, like the whole of Japan, the city is characterized by an ageing population. The birth rate is low thus growth in population is almost zero. For example, in 2010, there were 109000 births and 104000 deaths. This implied that the population grew by only 4000 for the whole year (Tokyo Metropolitan Government). In the same year, the child population (ages 0 – 14) was 1.477 million labor force (ages 15 – 64) at 8.85 million and finally the aged populace (ages 65 and over) at 2.642 million. The figures can be simplified into percentages to 11.4%, 68.2% and 20.4% respectively. Tokyo is characterized by light industries that are comprised of electronics, and manufacturing of agricultural chemicals and products. Moreover, the city is more of managerial city that houses the offices of many companies in other areas in japan. Most heavy industries are located outside in the prefectures surrounding Tokyo and also other cities such as Fukushima and Osaka. Japan is a heavily industrialized country. Thus, Tokyo offers a center where stock trade is done. The Tokyo stock exchange takes the second position in the world after New York. In 2013, the stock exchange market was US$4.5 trillion. This depicts Tokyo as a major economic center in Japan and the world (Clark 164). The per capita income of japan is one of the highest in the word. Tokyo, being the biggest city in terms of GDP in the world, enjoys a high per capita income of $55766. This is relatively higher than that of the whole country because of the high GDP of Tokyo is in excess of $837 billion. Education in Tokyo

Smart working. The impact of work organisation and job design Essay

Smart working. The impact of work organisation and job design - Essay Example It is claimed that the most significant resource of any business is the people it employs, its manpower or workforce. As the world adopts technology at a faster rate with more sophisticated applications and as products tend towards greater similarity there is a growing awareness that a business may differentiate itself by creating a quality, focused and well-motivated workforce. In addition, the world labor market is become more flexible with greater mobility for well-qualified staff to move between major business centers. It is therefore of greater significance than ever before to keep good staff and to continue to attract the best recruits possible. Due to the importance of the people of the company it is equally important and difficult for the managers to manage these people. With the passage of time, the world of work and the workers in it are becoming more and more competitive and aggressive about their success at work. The advent of globalization has demolished the economic barriers that once existed and has opened doors to markets that were once thought to be too out of reach to cater. The change in the attitude towards workforce management has been great and fundamental since the early years of the twentieth century and the introduction of mass production. There are still firms and factories that 'hire and fire' workers on an almost daily basis and offer no training and staff development at all. However, these are now the exception rather than the rule. Modern Human Resource Management has been developed not just in response to the legal constraints on how workers are treated but also as a recognition that a truly successful and competitive business depends on the support and co-ordination of a well trained and suitably motivated team of staff.

Pestle Framework of Business Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Pestle Framework of Business - Essay Example From this discussion it is clear that  regarding the influence of the political environmental factors, matters of restrictions, policy, and other derivatives of the environment determine the nature of operations in ways that determine the trends of business. These factors have the capacity of enhancing the nature of business just as they have the potential of providing some robust framework that is used for the general performance of the business. This discussion highlights that it is important to consider some of the issues attending to the processes of business in terms of the various issues that affect and are in turn affected by the environmental factors. An awareness of these factors is necessary for the processes of planning, strategizing, budgeting, and the general management of the business. The development of strategy is usually determined by the ability of the business to use all the positive values and qualities that are necessary for the sustenance of the business. In es sence, the levels of success or failure of a business is necessarily determined by the manner in which the business connects with environmental factors as considered within the aspect of reality.  The political environment usually occurs in ways that are generally available for the determination of the levels of performance of the business. It is important to consider the fact that the political factors are connected to the other macro-economic factors that determine the nature of the operating environment.... The political environment usually occurs in ways that are generally available for the determination of the levels of performance of the business. It is important to consider the fact that the political factors are connected to the other macro-economic factors that determine the nature of the operating environment. Political factors in the environment of business could be conducive or hostile depending on a range of factors. Political environments that feature stringent conditions and policies will essentially stifle the aspect of competition within the process (Murray-Webster, 2010, p. 121). The realization of the range of factors that attend to the issues and values of the organization will essentially lead to the development of issues based on some of the matters that attend to matters of relevance and the determination of a range of factors that attend to the issues related to commerce and enterprise. Some of the issues that affect the operations of business are largely regulated by the fact that issues affecting business are essentially regulated by concerns in the world of business. Regarding the economic forces, certain economic factors have a direct impact on the manner in which businesses operate as understood within the framework of environmental factors. Generally, some of the issues that attend to the matter of challenge are necessarily controlled by the manner in which certain issues and processes are regulated. Economic growth and exchange rates are some of the economic factors that affect the performance of businesses within certain economic environments (Cheverton, 2005, p. 30). Economic growth encompasses a range of factors such as the availability of efficient banking services and robust and dependable

SLP 4 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

SLP 4 - Essay Example The concept of skills gaping is also important in the organization in that it helps the management to identify the tasks that require a variety of skills. Skill variety is known as the degree to which the job involves many different work activities or requires several skills and talents (Jackson & Schuler, 2000). The management may be in a position to fine tune the skills of the employees in order to improve their competencies. This also helps the management to identify the gap in the required skills among the employees that may need to be filled. On the other hand, this process also helps the management to recruit the right people with the right skills for certain tasks in the organization. The performance of the organization as a whole is improved if the workers have the requisite skills to perform a variety of tasks. During my course of work, I have seen this process used. I worked in the marketing department during my previous employment and I have realised that there are a number of skills required by different people in order for them to perform different work tasks. For instance, people with good verbal communication skills were assigned tasks that mainly dealt with customer issues. These people would deal directly with the customers and other stakeholders. On the other hand, people who had good technical skills such as computer knowledge were given tasks such as customer database maintenance and management. These people were also responsible for computing data obtained from online marketing research carried in the company. In order to apply this process in the work environment, it is important to identify the skills possessed by the employees and the skills needed to perform different tasks in the organization. This helps the responsible authorities to assign people with the right skills to perform certain tasks in the organisation. This also helps to minimise

Globalization in Morocco Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Globalization in Morocco - Essay Example The population of Morocco is approximately 33,757,175 (World Fact Book) with a mixture of ethnic groups like Muslims, Christians, Arabs, Jewish and others. The official language spoken is Arabic and its dialects and the language used for business is French. Their legal system is based on Islamic law and French and Spanish civil law systems. The economic policies of Morocco brought some stability to the country in the 1990’s but could not initiate sufficient growth to put an end to the prevailing unemployment problems. The problem worsened when draught reduced the output in agriculture and as a result wheat had to be imported at sky rocketing world prices. Trying to build up small and medium enterprises and its continued dependence on foreign energy slowed down the economy still further. Therefore Moroccan authorities realize that understanding the reasons for their poverty and providing jobs to beat the problem of unemployment and improving agriculture are the key points necessary to improve domestic security and further development. To improve the living conditions of its people the Moroccan Government is trying to implement a few reforms in their effort of opening its economy to foreign investors. Their currency the dirham is wholly convertible only for current account transactions. In 2005, the Moroccan Government launched the National Initiative for Human Development (INDH), a $2 billion social development plan that addressed the poverty and unemployment issues of the country and to improve the conditions of the urban slums in the country. (World Fact Book) In 2006, it also took part in the FTA (Free Trade Agreement) (World Fact Book) with the United States to resolve some of the long term issues associated with improvement in education and Job prospects for Moroccan youth. The FTA is also responsible for bridging the gap between the rich and the poor by encouraging tourism and boosting competition in the textile

MBA MARKETING PAPER - Essay Example cess of interaction between the organizations and consumers is undergoing a significant change and hence the process of marketing communication has also changed significantly over the past few years. The big question is that how this changed communication would influence the overall marketing concepts. Today internet is utilized as a great medium of marketing. Organizations have been almost forced to use internet as a medium of marketing mainly because of changing consumer behavior with respect to the change in communication process. With the increase in number users of World Wide Web and internet there would be more use of these two as a medium of marketing communication. There are several operational and commercial advantages that internet provide to the marketers. In reply marketers should properly use the platform of internet as there are opportunities of delivering the contents in varieties of ways. The applicability of internet in the marketing communication process has shown t hat there is huge difference in information and the vehicle that is used to deliver information. According to the discussion in the article, internet is such an agency that enables marketers to integrate different aspects of marketing communication. Marketers can integrate different off line and online tactics with the objective of meeting the overall long term strategic goal of the organization. In internet dominated market place consumers are considered as active participants rather than passive recipients in the communication process. This actually has challenged the functionalist view of communication because today after the arrival of World Wide Web and internet, traditional and hegemonic media has been integrated and converted into a hyper electronic market place where the process of communication between the consumer and the marketer are more dialogic and flexible. Previously marketers are found to be more dependent on some traditional mechanistic communication models and this

Habitat for Humanity Essay Example for Free

Habitat for Humanity Essay Habitat for Humanity originated at Koinonia Farm, which is a small Christian farming community located outside of Americus, Georgia. Clarence Jordan brought the idea to Millard Fuller, who is the founder and president of Habitat for Humanity International. They developed the idea of â€Å"partnership housing,† calling for families in need of a home to partner with volunteers to build affordable homes. In 1975 Fuller and his wife Linda established Habitat for Humanity with one clear vision in mind â€Å"a world where everyone has a decent place to live. † Habitats ministry is based on the conviction that to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ we must reflect Christs love in our own lives by loving and caring for one another. Our love must not be words only – it must be true love, which shows itself in action, this is the full forces that lead Fuller and his wife to establish this organization. Habitat provides an opportunity for people to put their faith and love into action, bringing diverse groups of people together to make affordable housing and better communities a reality for everyone. The idea of Habitat for Humanity is to work in partnership with God and people to build decent, affordable, houses in which people can live and grow into all what God has intended. The Fuller’s vision has become a successful reality that has presently helped build over 500,000 homes and helped over 2.5 million people worldwide. Habitat for humanity is operated based on two main sources: donations and mortgage payments of the homeowners. Donations generate from individuals, foundations, and businesses their monies are used to purchase land and materials. The no-interest mortgage payments made by current Habitat homeowners greatly contribute to support the construction of additional Habitat homes. Some organizations such as Ameri-Corp may pay their volunteers with school courses and materials in return for their time. Habitat for Humanity’s crucial point is not just to build a house and help people to be under a roof, but their main goal is to build a clean, decent, and stable house for families: these families can provide stability to their children, the sense of dignity and pride grows for these families; health, physical safety, and security improves, educational and job prospects. My experience at Habitat for Humanity was a powerful and passionate one. Amazingly, one of the most precious gifts we can give one another is – time. A couple of hours or days can translate into a lifetime of hopefulness and commitment to strive and I had the opportunity to experience this reality, throughout my experience at the Habitat. I have learned what the meaning of passion is mainly because I’ve had the genuine sentiment to finish the work I’ve started, along with many other people that shared this experience with me. The other thing that I discovered about passion is how easy it is to be a family with people you have met for the first time if you open your heart to them and let them be part of your life. The other thing I found about passion is the skills that I have that would help to repair the universe. In this experience I found something that has deepened my faith that God created each one of us uniquely with specific skills that not everybody has; therefore, this experience helped me to find skills that I am going to use to help building the world again with passion and also the experience and realize that the simple usage of my hands can a the life of a family. The people that I met at Habitat for Humanity were dedicated to their jobs. As I approached the job site, I noticed several groups of people who were putting their time and organization into this home-building project. They invested hundreds of hours of sweat into building houses to help low income families. Some days, community volunteers spend more than eight hours working on the houses. To complete their jobs, volunteers overcame obstacles such as: lack of supplies, unusable wood, and lack of enough workers. The employees and volunteers I met were motivated to overcome obstacles to help families in need. Though they may not have had the best materials, they used what they had in order to complete the job. Many of these materials come from the Re-Store; this store sells donations mostly given by the community. The funds collected are used for materials and other services that are required. Volunteers must be willing to work in the heat and endure a lot of intense physical labor. Wall-framing, installing dry wall, plumbing and roofing are skills that the organization needs from volunteers. The volunteers I worked with were willing to endure the heat and physical labor in order to help low income families who need a home. If you are looking for a place where you can make a huge impact on society, Habitat for Humanity is the place. People of all backgrounds, races, and religions are invited to build houses for people in our community. Habitat for Humanity is capable of working with each volunteer’s skill level. Don’t be afraid of hard work. No matter what goes on in your life, you will always remember all of the positive things you have done to help out in your community. In conclusion, Habitat for Humanity does such essential work and by that work they recognize the concept of passion and Christianity, and the other thing about them is they recognize that there are needs in the world and these needs should be met with their work. My experience helped me change my idea about service and the real meaning of service, and it let me be familiar with the big three R’s- restoration, reparation, and reconciliation that are the keys for service. The three R’s were spoken among many of the volunteers that I met, indeed the R’s simply describe this experience, the other thing I found is that dedicating myself is another important part of service because without dedicating myself, the work that we need to do to repair the universe would not be as perfect as how it should be.

Web Database Based Inventory System

Web Database Based Inventory System Web database based inventory system is for management of items, orders, customers and payment. This system helps in Stock management, payment, and orders. This system allows conducting payment for customers and for ordered items in the purchase order. The main objective of this project is about the design of Web-based inventory system. Bakery feyasse use traditional paper based inventory system to manage his information concerning customer, ordered item, item and payment. There are several problems with this system such as time consuming, hard labour and sometimes lost of information. The sales growth and order misplacement cause a great deal of work for Bakery Feyasse. The manual system is prone to errors resulting major complaints from customers. The volume of data and complexity of analysis to be conducted seems overwhelming using their manual system which sometimes raises suspicions of returned results which are also difficult to correct or verify. After careful investigation, discussion thorough analysis of existing method, it was agreed that a new effective system is required to solve Bakery Feyasse problems. After reviewing the possible design choices, it was decided that MySQL database and PHP script language is the best economical fit for Bakery Feyasse system in terms of cost, ease of maintenance, interface design and upgradability using Microsoft windows platform. The database would be link to the companys website via PHP script language. The online server will enable employee to enter, create, update and delete information online. 1.1. Project objectives 1. To create a system that will assist the Bakery employee at their different task 2. To explore the ideas involved in the development of a web database inventory site. This web database inventory system will include the main function as following: Select data from database Update information into the database Delete information from database And add information into database The objectives of this project are: Design a relational database Implement this database Testing the new system Evaluate the system 1.2. Personal objectives My personal objective for this project is to complete the project on time. I set up a monthly time table to carry out different task. My enthusiasm is that after completing this project. I will gain more knowledge in computer technology. To enable me to succeed this project, I used the skills I gain last year in MySQL, and SQL. I also learn how to create a dynamic web site which I did not know. I learn new script language which is PHP. 1.2. 1. Career objectives Gain my BSc Honours Degree. Project Limitations I am entirely conscious that my assignment is to create a web database system which is not an easy task and I am also aware of the short I have got to accomplish this task. So the time is my target. I am thinking of finish on time. Time management has been considered because; I also got one exam to prepare. 1.4. Gantt chart 1.5. Literature review At the start of my project, the researches have been made to gathering information because many activities go into the development of a new system. Understanding system requirements, choosing database-tier software, designing databases, and building the tier are the first steps in successful web database application development. The following issues have been explored: Information System Analysis Database Database management systems Database Server Database tier Information Systems Analysis System Analysis System Design This phase show how the system run. Prototype This phase will enable the employee to understand the functionality of the new system. Implementation Development of the new system Testing The new system is tested in order to verify its functions Database A database is a collection of related data. The data stored is rows, which make up a simple customers, items, orders and payment details. Database Management System Database Management System enables the users to retrieve relevant information. It refers to information infrastructures that compose of relevant information. Database system creates and maintains a database and enables individual business application to extract the data in order to create report. Database server Database server is a system designed to manipulate the database. Its function is to store, retrieve, and manage information. Its plays an important role in web services and provides the n-tier connection through the Internet users via their web browser. Database tier Database tier is the base of a web database application. In a three-tier architecture application, the database tier manages the data. The data management typically includes storage and retrieval of data, as well as managing updates, access by more than one middle-tier process, providing security, ensuring the integrity of data, and providing support services such as data backup. 1.6. Technical review The web based database inventory system is creating using MySQL application and PHP script language. The interface of the system is developed with Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). The system is accessible anywhere that have access to Internet. 1.6.1. Wed Based Database Systems development tools Dreamweaver CS3 Dreamweaver CS3 Dreamweaver is a full-featured Web application development tool. Its features not only assist with creation and editing Web pages, but also with managing and maintaining the entire Web site. MySQL MySQL implies the Client /Server architecture, which compose of a server process and client process. A server process manages the logical database management. A sever process takes of how the data is stored and organized. The client process would be described as process that accesses the server in order to store, retrieve, update and alter the database schema. SQL SQL (Structured Query Language) SQL used to communicate with most databases. You can manage your database, retrieve data from it, or add data to it using SQL queries. You build and send an SQL query to the database. The database responds by performing the action defined by the query or, if the database is unable to perform the requested operation, its returns error message with information about the problem. Cold Fusion ColdFusion is a tagged language, developed by Macromedia, who is also the developer of Dreamweaver. A stand-alone Web server is also included as part of ColdFusion. The stand-alone server is fine development, but you should use a more powerful Web site. ASP ASP Application Server Pages (ASP) is Microsoft technology. It built into IIS (Internet Information Server). When you use ASP technology; you have your choice of languages VBScript or JScript. When you set up your Dreamweaver site, you specify which language you want to use. 1.6.2. Web Based Database development technologies PHP PHP is a Scripting Language that is interpreted on the web server before the webpage is sent to a web browser to be displayed. This can be seen in the expanded PHP recursive acronym  PHP-Hypertext  Pre-processor. 1.7. Technologies used 1.7.1. PHP and MySQL PHP and MySQL work in combination, where the database is MySQL and the script language is PHP. How PHP and MySQL work together? PHP collect information and MySQL store information. PHP will create retrieve information form for the system, but MySQL keep the information in a format PHP. 1.7.2. Why use PHP and MySQL PHP and MySQL combine together make easy the development of a dynamic Web page. HTML creates useful web pages with the addition of PHP and MySQL where you can collect information. 1. 8. Methodologies Approach 1.8.1. Prototyping Prototyping is most appropriate methodology for systems that include data querying, online data updating, and on-line data reporting functions. It is used to create appropriate data access interfaces for users and to help identify the capabilities that users wants in the system, such as the options on a menu used by the a system. 1.8.2. Rapid Application Development Its basic process is to get systems personnel and users together in formal meetings, where they rapidly develop systems that provide users with their information needs. 1.8.3. Chosen Methodology Prototyping Methodology Development choice has been influenced by several factors: 1. Clarify the user requirements 2. Familiarity with the base technology 3. System complexity 4. Need for the system reliability 5. Time pressure 6. Need to see progress on the time schedule. 7. And when timelines are short because they best enable me to adjust the functionality in the system on the basis of a specific delivery date. CHAPTER 2 ANALYSIS 2.1. Bakery Feyasse profile Bakery Feyasse is a Bakery that was created by Malan Kouao in 1988. The business started in 1988 with one Bakery and after continuous progress a second Bakery has been created in 2008. The diagram below show the Bakery Structure Production manager Sale manager Manager Chairman Department manager Department manager Department manager Fig: Bakerys Feyasse structure 2.2. Existing system (appendices) The Bakery use traditional paper based where the employee checks the availability of the items by querying the items books, and fills the book by using paper and pen. Moreover the ordering process is made by pen and hand and it is time consuming to contact the production and it causes slow moving for the customer order and there is risk of mistake caused by the employee. All employee access the same data, share the same information .The salesperson check the availability of the items by querying the production department. The production department check the availability of the items from the book register manually. After knowing the availability, he fills up the availability book manually so that the salesperson will know which item is available. The account manager checks the stock items manually in order to re order the product. The information about the item, the customers, and the suppliers is kept in a temporary contact book 2.2. Current Systems The proposed system is a web based inventory system. The staff of each department can work peacefully at their department. The system allows the staff to fill up the order payment, the order, the item order form. The objective of the new system is to create an online access database to store all data concerning the Bakery. The main activities performed by the system are. The system provides data processing and storage. The system display system functionality. The system functionality is accessible by clicking selected task. The system will allow the staff to insert information through the selected page. The system will allow the staff to cancel information. The system will allow the staff to process a payment. The system will allow the staff to update information. 2.2.1. Benefits with current system 1. To increase the good organisation in item availability, customers details, orders, ordered items and payment data inputting by using database system. 2. Salespersons will be able to view the list of items produced by the production department anytime 3. Customers details can be kept 4. Order can be kept for future monthly report. System Requirement Analysis At this stage I met the user to obtain a detailed understanding of Bakery needs. A functional specification, process model, logical model are defined. Analysis of the problem where Bakery Feyasse try to find a solution with the new system Defining the problem Identify the problem causes Specifying the solution Identifying the users requirements, And identifying new opportunity for using new technology 2.2. Users Requirements Define the objectives of the new system and develop a detailed description of the function that the new system will perform The system provides data processing and storage. The system display system functionality. The system functionality is accessible by clicking selected task. The system allows the staff to insert information through the selected page. The system allows the staff to cancel information. The system allows the staff to process a payment. The system allows the staff to update information. The manager shall be able to do the job of the salesperson 2.3. System Specification The system would enable end-users (employee) to create, update information All information about customer, item, order and payment will be stored in a database, which the web database inventory system will display through different interfaces Allows the deletion and appends information Facility to query the database Enables the manipulation of sales activities Tracking user activities using the system 2.4. Use Cases Select order/customer details Add order/customer details Delete order/customer details Update order/customer details Use cases description (appendices) CHAPTER 3DESIGN 3.1. Architectural Design Logical design Physical design 3.1.1. Entities and Attributes Bakery Feyasse will have a relational database system with the following entities and attributes. customer (cust_id, cust_name, cust_address,cust_city) order(order_id,cust_id*,item_id*, quantity,item_price, total_price) payment(order_id*,payment_id, payment_type, payment_description, amount) item(item_id ,item_name, item_price, item_description) 3.1.2. Connecting To Database In order to issue MySQL data manipulation statements, we must specify a username, a password and a database to use. This information will have been provided by your systems adminsistrator. If you are running MySQL yourself, then skip ahead to the section on  Creating a Database in Part 6   then come back to this point. Either way you should now have in your possession a database name, a valid password for that database and a password. For the purposes of these workshops the following example values will be used. Database Name vworksDB Valid MySQL Username vworks Password mypass In order to log into MySQL correctly we must pass information to the MySQL client program when we start it. This is done with the following commands and syntax. $ mysql -u -p 3.1.2. Database Design using MySQL MySQL database is made up of database which contains tables. A table is a section of the database for storing information. mysql> show columns from item; ++-++++-+ | Field | Type | Null | Key | Default | Extra | ++-++++ | item_id | int(11) | NO | PRI | NULL | auto_increment | | item_name | varchar(50) | YES | | NULL | | | item_price | float(6,2) | YES | | NULL | | | item_description | text | YES | | NULL | | ++-++++-+ mysql> show columns from order; a refaire +-+-++++-+ | Field | Type | Null | Key | Default | Extra | ++-++++-+ | order_id | int(11) | YES | | NULL | | | item_id | varchar(50) | YES | | NULL | | | quantity | int(11) | YES | | NULL | | | item_price | float(6,2) | YES | | NULL | | | total_price | float(6,2) | YES | | NULL | | +-+-++++- mysql> show columns from customer; ++-++++-+ | Field | Type | Null | Key | Default | Extra | ++-++++-+ | cust_id | int(11) | NO | PRI | NULL | auto_increment | | cust_name | varchar(20) | YES | | NULL | | | cust_address | varchar(20) | YES | | NULL | | | cust_city | varchar(25) | YES | | NULL | | | cust_phone | varchar(25) | YES | | NULL | | ++-++++-+ mysql> show columns from payment; ++-++++ | Field | Type | Null | Key | Default | Extra ++-++++ | payment_id | int(11) | NO | PRI | NULL | auto_increment | order_id | int(11) | YES | | NULL | | order_date | date | YES | | NULL | | payment_type | varchar(10) | YES | | NULL | | payment_description | varchar(20) | YES | | NULL | | amount | float(6,2) | YES | | NULL | ++-++++ 3.4. Database Normalisation (Appendices) 1NF customer(cust_id,cust_name,cust_address,cust_city) order (order_id, cust_id*,item_id*, quantity, item_price,total_price) payment(order_id*,payment_id,payment_type,payment_description,amount) 2NF customer(cust_id,cust_name,cust_address,cust_city) order (order_id,cust_id*,quantity,total_price) payment(order_id*,payment_id,payment_type,payment_description,amount) item(item_id ,item_name, item_price,item_description) 3NF customer(cust_id,cust_name,cust_address,cust_city) ordered_item(order_id,quantity,total_price) payment(order_id*,payment_id,amount) item(item_id ,item_name, item_price, item_description) payment_type(payment_type,payment_description) 3.5. Entity Relationship There are three kinds of relationship. One-to-one relationship means that one of each thing is used in the relationship One-to-many relationship means one row in one table is linked to many row in another table. Many-to-many relationship means many rows in one table are linked to many rows in another table. 3.5. SQL QUERIES Talking to Databases Using SQL SQL is an abbreviation for Structured Query Language. It is a surprising natural language that allows us to talk to relational databases, such as MySQL, to request and modify data. It also allows us to get information about and modify the framework that contains the data, databases themselves, and tables within them. The queries formed with SQL can range from the simple to the very complex, which makes it an extremely powerful tool for working with data Inserting, Updating, Selecting and Deleting. Insert data into database table The INSERT INTO statement is used to add new record in a table. Syntax INSERT INTO table_name VALUES (value1, value2à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦) [reference] mysql> INSERT INTO CUSTOMERS VALUES( -> 10,Gnahore Hortense,34 webster road,Bermondsey), -> (11,Kouakou Nkruma,10 salisbury court,London); mysql> SELECT * FROM CUSTOMERS; ++++ | CustID | NAME | ADDRESS | CITY ++++ | 10 | Gnahore Hortense | 34 webster road | Bermondsey | 11 | Kouakou Nkruma | 10 salisbury court | London ++++ Select data from a database table. The SELECT statement is used to select data from a database. Syntax SELECT column_name [reference] FROM table_name mysql> SELECT * FROM CUSTOMERS; ++++ | CustID | NAME | ADDRESS | CITY ++++ | 10 | Gnahore Hortense | 34 webster road | Bermondsey | 11 | Kouakou Nkruma | 10 salisbury court | London ++++ Update data in a database existing records in a table. The UPDATE statement is used to modify data in a table. Syntax UPDATE table_name SET column1=value, column2=value2à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ [Reference] WHERE some_column=some_value. mysql> UPDATE CUSTOMERS -> SET ADDRESS =45 clement road -> WHERE CustID =11; Delete data in a database The DELETE FROM statement is used to delete records from a database. Syntax DELETE FROM table_name WHERE some_column= some value [reference] 3.6. Web Database Structure Home page Description of home page: 3.6.1. Menu structure BAKERY FEYASSE MAIN MENU CUSTOMER ITEM ORDER PAYMENT Page description: 3.6.1.1. Order page structure BAKERY FEYASSE ORDER SELECT ORDER ADD ORDER UPDATE ORDER DELETE ORDER Page description: 3.6.1.2. Select Order page 3.6.1.3. Add Order Page 3.6.1.4. Update Order page 3.6.1.5. Delete Order page SQL is not exclusive to MySQL, nor should it be mistaken as being a part of PHP. Its also not the only database query language out there. It is, however, the most popular. If you learn how to speak SQL, that knowledge translates to a range of other popular database products. Working with Existing Databases through PHP Whether you are using PHP and MySQL, or another combination, the same basic procedure for working with a database applies. First, a connection to the database server is established. This connection usually lasts for the lifetime of the running script. Additionally, as you will later see, there are instances where they can be contiguous across scripts. Next, a specific database is selected to work with. Only one database at a time can be selected per connection, but you can switch to different databases without terminating the connection. You can also have multiple connections established within the script, each with an independent selected database. Finally, once you have a connection established and a database selected, you can begin to work with the tables within them by using SQL to issue various commands. Data can be retrieved, added, modified, or deleted, and changes can be made to the selected database itself. When finished, the connection to the database server is terminated manually with mysql_close(), or automatically with the end of the script. Lets take a closer look at each step separately Things to Remember MySQL is a popular relational database product SQL is a language used to communiate with MySQL (and other databases). It allows information to be retrevied, modified, and deleted. It also provides a means to modify databases and tables. Databases are similiar to associative arrays. Each database can contain one or more tables. Each table is composed of records divided into fields. Working with a database through a PHP script follows this basic process: Connect to the server, select a database, perform any queries on the database, close the connection. SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE make up SQLs data manipulation commands. The data retreived from a table can be limited in different ways: Specific columns can be returned by including them within the query, the WHERE clause can be used to to include or exclude specific records, and LIMIT can cap the number of entries that are returned. Results can be sorted using the ORDER BY clause. By default, String Type fields are sorted alphabetically; Numeric Type fields are sorted from smallest to largest. When creating a new table in a database, a unique table name must be specified. In addition, a name, field type, and length are defined for each column in the table. In almost every case, a table should have an AUTO_INCREMENT Primary ID column defined. All of PHPs MySQL handling functions return FALSE if there is an error in the query or the query fails. Using mysql_error() returns the exact error reported by MySQL. Connecting to MySQL Just like a multi-user computer system or an FTP server, MySQL allows different user accounts to be established with individual levels of access. To establish a connection to MySQL, three pieces of information are required: the hostname of the database server, the username for the account, and the associated password. This information is passed to the mysql_connect() function, which attempts to establish the connection: $connect = mysql_connect(hostname,username,password); The function returns a value TRUE on success, and FALSE on failure, so it is useful (though not necessary) to assign the function to a variable. In the above example, $connect is used. It can be evaluated to avoid performing any additional queries if the connection attempt failed: if ($connect==FALSE) { print Database connection failed; exit; } It is also useful to store the results in a variable because the function returns a unique connection identifier upon success. The variable then can be passed to any of PHPs MySQL handling functions (typically as the second parameter) to specify that  this  database connection should be used, as opposed to any other active ones within the script. Selecting a Database Once a connection is set up, the next step is to select a database. To do this, all that is needed is the name of an existing database: mysql_select_db(database); As with mysql_connect(), this function returns TRUE or FALSE depending on whether the database was successfully selected. To specify which connection the function should use, we can pass a connection identifier to the function: mysql_select_db(database,$connect); Without the second parameter, the function uses the database connection that was last established within the script. Querying the Database The mysql_query() function is essentially a PHP wrapper for performing SQL commands. Any valid and complete SQL statement can be passed as a parameter to this function. Four types of queries make up SQLs data manipulation statements. They are as follows: SELECT, UPDATE, INSERT, and DELETE. SELECT The SELECT query is used to retrieve data from one or more tables within a database. As youll learn later, we can also select data from multiple tables using Table Joins, but the simplest type of SELECT statement works with only one table at a time. The syntax looks like this: SELECT * FROM users Essentially, this statement says, Select all the fields in all the rows of the table called users. The asterisk is a wild card character that tells MySQL that it should grab anything available in the specified tables. To request this data from a PHP script, we pass the query to the mysql_query () function. Because we are expecting records to be returned from the database, the function must be assigned to a variable. The query is a string, so PHP requires it to be surrounded by quotes. (Variables are often passed as part of queries and SQL requires that string values in WHERE clauses and INSERT statements be surrounded with single quotes. Though single quotes can be used here, it is generally preferable to use double quotes for clarity.) $result = mysql_query (SELECT * FROM users); Just like mysql_connect () and mysql_select_db (), this function will return FALSE if there is an error in the SQL. If the function is successful, however, $result will hold a resource identifier. Because the variable just holds an identifier, we cannot get any of our records by outputting $result. To get the data, we need to pass the result to another PHP function, mysql_fetch_array (). This function returns an array of each record from a SELECT query, line by line. Unless you know for a fact that your query will only return a single record, it is advisable to use a while loop to itinerate through each row of the result set. The function maintains an internal place mark of which record it is on, so the loop will terminate once all of the records have been returned. Lets return to our sample database from the start of the article and the select statement above to see how you would output the data: while ($row = mysql_fetch_array($result)) {   Ãƒâ€šÃ‚  Ãƒâ€šÃ‚  Ãƒâ€šÃ‚   print $row[id].,.$row[name].,.$row[email].; } Notice that the array indexes of $row match the column names of the table. The array generated by mysql_fetch_array() can optionally be an associative or a numeric array. By default, records are accessible by both types of keys. So, the id column (the first column in the table) can be accessed as $row[id] or $row[0]; INSERT INSERT is used to add a new record to a table. The syntax looks like this: mysql_query(INSERT INTO users (id,name, email) VALUES(,Name, [emailprotected]'); By now, the first part of this query should look fairly familiar to you. It begins with the SQL command we are going to perform, in this case INSERT. Because we are inserting a new record, INTO is included, followed by the name of the table we are adding it to. The first set of parentheses surrounds a list of the fields within the table. These must be listed in the same order that they occur in the actual table. The second portion defines the values that are going to be added. They must match the order of the fields within the query and the table for them to be inserted in the proper location. Like the field names, SQL requires that each value be surrounded by quotes, because they are strings. If there is no value to be inserted, the position for the value must still be reserved by using empty quotes. If you are inserting values for all of the fields, the field listing may be left out: mysql_query(INSERT INTO users VALUES(,Name, [emailprotected]'); MySQL will insert the values into the columns in the order that they appear. Technology improves life

Technology improves life Nowadays, people use the technology to make their life better, easier and more enjoyable. Also, the technology can make their society more convenient and safe. Without the technology the world wouldnt be what it`s today. the technology has made the world smaller and made things easier. According to the American heritage science dictionary Technology is the use of scientific knowledge to solve practical problems, especially in industry and commerce. Also, the specific methods, materials, and devices used to solve practical problems. (Houghton Mifflin Company 2005). One of the major benefits of technology is the great advances in medical science .It saves a lot of innocent lives and we cant dispensable it in medicine today. It discovers many serious diseases and find newer ways to cure them. Also, getting everything easily and faster .we can download from the internet any song, music and movie instead of buying them. Although there are many benefits of technology, what people do not understand is technology can be harmful to the society. Omar Bradley says If we continue to develop our technology without wisdom or prudence, our servant may prove to be our executioner. (Omar Bradley 1893-1981).In this essay, I would like to analyses how the technology can be harmful to the society. Laziness is a major side effect of technology in society. Who can remember when people had to go to the library to research for a topic or had to go morning to get news paper? When the Internet was introduced, people never thought it would be like today. Now , people are able to do everything in internet while they are sitting such as research ,getting the latest news , reading books and sending emails .Also, at the moment the lectures give assignment to the students, they do plagiarism instead of going to the library or doing by their own word. One of the effects of technology is cybercrime. Cybercrime is a crime related to any electronic device. According to James R. Richards Cybercrime is computers are responsible directly or indirectly for every aspect of our lives, from the operation of our cars to our personal banking to flow of date in our business. With the exponential rise in the legitimate uses of computers, it follows that there would be an inevitable increase in their ill egitimate use (James R. Richards, 1999). For example, hack the emails and the computers are the simplest crime of cybercrime. Also, one of the most popular crimes committed on the internet is attaching websites. In recent years, some teachers were hacked their computers by students to get the exam papers. Less motivated is the second effect of technology in society. Always people choose the easiest way to solve their problems and this led to less thought and work. The problem is if someone get in terrible no one will help him and this can make him frustrated and less motivated. Example of less motivated is students fail to do their work because they play games in their computer all the day instead of working on their lesson plan. Also, nowadays people start to use a technology way such as calculator to resolve mathematics exercises instead of using their brain. Less tolerant is the third effect of technology in society .Nowadays , productivity is the most important but the rights and the needs of workers have become less priority .Also, the workers have to do not just more work ,but also they have to work more faster .This strategies includes any methods for producing products. The problem is these equipments give employers something they want: cheap labor, make the job easier and create a need for fewer people. In this way, technology affects the society to become less tolerant. Therefore, people begin to expect these equipments to help them to solve their problems more faster. Friendship Essay: The Consequences of Having Friends -- Friendship Essa

Having friends is a natural occurrence in most lives. The majority of people do not think of going anywhere without their friends, especially teenagers. Where these ordinary teens find their acquaintances is in high school. It is where friends are made and hold a substantial role in the students’ lives. High school students choose their friends for various reasons, and some of their choices may result in positive and negative effects. One effect of friends in high school is general influence. For example, peer pressure is an unfortunate, but predominant result of having companions. Several teens look for acceptance in the eyes of their peers. Consequently, they will go to great lengths in order to win their favor, allowing those they desire to befriend to control their actions. Another n...

Culture and Body Modification :: essays research papers fc

The African Bushmen: Driven Out of the Bush and into the Industrial Era?   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   4.)  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Technology and Culture have both influenced each other equally. Technology has been directed as an improvement in our lives, but on the other hand, Culture has been present in every invention, noticeable or not, and advancement in our evolving society. Technology is becoming focused upon more and more everyday, but culture is the determining factor that decides if there is a necessity for an improvement. There are endless views and perspectives that this situation can be viewed from, but without a doubt, technology and culture shape one another. Culture has been a part of our society, and way of life, forever. It is almost impossible to come up with an idea that isn’t influenced by culture. Picture our lives without cars, television, and computers. This would be an example of everyday life without technology. People could function happily in that type of atmosphere, but technology has changed our lives forever. Technology has also cha nged our pace and perspective on education. Students previously would have to go to libraries and spend a lot of time researching to find out information for class assignments, but with technology students can find almost anything on their home computers and by accessing the internet. Technology has definitely become the authoritative factor in our lives, but culture has shaped technology. Technology is made and used in such a variety of ways because many people who use the technology of today come from all walks of life and have different necessities, so to compensate for that, technology must adapt to all different cultures.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Technology in all of its forms, and in recent times with its rapid improvement and advancement, seems to push itself upon us and our culture, and the same can be said for the rest of the world. Cultures that have never been exposed to technology are now using it in small forms, or have adapted to it quite fondly. These cultures realize the supposed importance of technology in their lives, or may enjoy the simplicity of a new tool that frees up spare time and can get objectives accomplished faster and possibly in a better way than previous endeavors.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Of course, there are cultures than ours who do not so easily embrace technology. This decision on a culture’s part may represent its wish to retain customs, or may just as easily represent its fear.

Billie Holiday Biography

Billie Holiday (born Eleanora Harris (1915–1959) was an African American jazz singer and songwriter. Her singing style, strongly inspired by jazz musicians, lead to a new way of using word choice and rhythm. A critic named John Bush once wrote that Holiday â€Å"changed the art of American pop vocals forever. † She only co-wrote a few songs, but a number of them have become jazz standards that many musicians strive to live up to.Some of these standards were set by songs of hers such as â€Å"God Bless the Child†, â€Å"Don't Explain†, â€Å"Fine and Mellow†, and â€Å"Lady Sings the Blues†. She also became famous for singing â€Å"Easy Living†, â€Å"Good Morning Heartache†, and â€Å"Strange Fruit†, a protest song  which became one of her standards and was made famous with her 1939 recording. In Harlem she started singing in various night clubs. Holiday took her professional pen name from  Billie Dove, an actress she admired, and the musician Clarence Holiday, thus was born â€Å"Billie Holiday†.The producer  John Hammond arranged for Holiday to make her recording debut, at age 18, in November 1933 with Benny Goodman, singing two songs: â€Å"Your Mother's Son-In-Law† and â€Å"Riffin' the Scotch. † The latter being her first big hit. â€Å"Son-in-Law† sold 300 records,  but â€Å"Riffin' the Scotch,† sold 5,000 records. Hammond was very impressed by Holiday's vocalization style. He said of Holiday that, â€Å"Her singing almost changed my music tastes and my musical life; because she was the first girl singer I'd come across who actually sang like an improvising jazz genius. Hammond compared Holiday positively to Armstrong and said she had a good sense of lyrics at her young age. In early 1959 Holiday found out that she had  cirrhosis of the liver. The doctor told her to stop drinking, which she did for a short time, but soon returned to heavy drinking . Some of her friends tried to get her to check into a hospital, but she did not go. On May 31, 1959, Holiday was forcibly taken to Metropolitan Hospital in New York suffering from  liver  and  heart disease. She was arrested for having drugs with her as she lay dying, and her hospital room was invaded by the police. Police officers were stationed at the door to her room because of her drugs. Holiday remained under police guard at the hospital until she died from  pulmonary edema  and  heart failure caused by cirrhosis of the liver on July 17, 1959. In the final years of her life, she had been gradually tricked out of her earnings because of her drug and alcohol addictions. She died with seventy cents in the bank and seven-hundred fifty dollar tabloid fee.

Explore the theme of loneliness in Mice and men Essay

Explore the theme of loneliness in Mice and men, how does Steinbeck show the loneliness of an itinerant lifestyle through three particular characters. Many of the characters in mice and men are lonely and this motivates them to look for an alternative way of life. This is one of the reasons why they are drifters. They are continually searching often without knowing what they are really looking for. Characters are also lonely because of something within themselves. Different characters seek comfort in different things, for Candy this is his dog, for George and Lenny it’s each other â€Å"I want you to stay with me Lenny†, for Crooks it’s his pride and skill at pitching horseshoes. These small comforts are the only things that keep these men going. They have no family to feed so the only real motivation they have to work is to keep themselves alive. Right from the beginning of the book Steinbeck emphasizes the loneliness of George and Lenny by putting just two men in such a big and empty space â€Å"On one side of the river the golden foot-hill slopes curve up to the strong and rocky Gabilan Mountains†. Steinbeck uses lexical choice like Strong and rocky to make the description more cinematographic so that you can actually see these two small mean compared to their mountainous surroundings. These two men have travelled together for all of their lives. They were friends as children but now George has had to take a more parental role over Lenny. â€Å"You know damn well what Lenny, now hand over that mouse.† The use of the word damn makes George sound much more authoritative. Lenny being mentally disabled is probably a lot less lonely in his mind compared to the other characters in the novel as his brain seems to be more child like and he is easily occupied â€Å"I’d just love to pet those rabbits George†. The main goal in Lenny’s life is to have his own rabbits. In a way this would be his way of becoming less lonely as he could be an authority figure over them rather than everyone else telling him what to do. George is Lenny’s best friend and mentor. He is the closest thing to family that Lenny has got from what we can tell in the book and although he gets angry sometimes and talks about how he could do so much better without Lenny, â€Å"When I think of the swell time I could have without you, I go nuts, I never get no peace.†, he knows deep down that without Lenny he wouldn’t be the same â€Å"No – look ! I was jus foolin, Lenny cause I want you to stay with me.† When Lenny threatens George that he will actually leave George realises the loneliness that they would both face if Lenny carried out the threat and told Lenny to stay. Crooks is the stable-buck on the ranch. Although most of the men are lonely none of them are outcasts. This is an advantage which Crooks doesn’t carry. He is a Negro and in the 1930’s racial discrimination was an every day practise â€Å"where the hell is that god damned nigger?† Writing about coloured people in this context in those days wasn’t a problem and people wouldn’t think twice about using words such as â€Å"nigger† or â€Å"Negro† to a black persons face. Crooks has no friends, he just sits in his own little room in the stables â€Å"and he had books too; a tattered dictionary and a mauled copy of the California civil code for 1905.† Reading these books has made Crooks intelligent and being so bitter this intelligence makes him manipulative at times. For example he teases Lenny about George not returning from town â€Å"S’pose George don’t come back no more, S’pose he just took a powder and just ain’t coming back.† He knows that Lenny is easily fooled and teasing him is a way of gaining a higher social status as he has someone to ridicule. Crooks has no woman in his life and the book doesn’t mention that he ever has. The only time Crooks isn’t lonely is when the men play the horseshoe tossing game. Crooks in this unique social activity is aloud to take part and forget that he is a social pariah â€Å"Outside came the clang of horse-shoes on the playing peg as Crooks scored top points† In conclusion one of the novels main themes is loneliness. There isn’t one character in the whole story who doesn’t feel lonely. All the men move to a ranch and just as they make good friends it becomes time to move in to the next ranch and start again. For Crooks he will most likely stay in the same place for all his working life living alone until such time he becomes useless and then he will be thrown out into a world that has no place for him. By the end of the novel the only two people who escape this life long loneliness seem to be Lenny and Curlies wife.

Sex and Violence in Popular Culture Research Paper - 1

Sex and Violence in Popular Culture - Research Paper Example Sex is usually equaled to gender as they are interchangeably used in everyday conversations. In reality, sex and gender are different. The former relates to physiological characteristic as the latter is a social concept. Sex is also an act that shows physical contact for procreation. Gender depends upon sets of social norms affected by culture and tradition that set apart males from females (Wilson 1-2). The other term to define is violence. Violence responds to conflict as harm is afflicted physically, emotionally or mentally on other people as a result of human action. Violence includes social injustices such as racism and poverty (Daoust 290). Both of them are linked to popular culture. Popular culture deals with the everyday living of people as the theme reflects the lives of the common people (Browne 5). The study deals with the negative effects of the prevailing images shown by the popular culture to the increasing cases of sex and violence as the two societal problems occur in the recent years in response to what the majority people believe. As people throughout their lives seek for learning about the world and its meanings, interactions happen as the humans in the society share experiences. People have roles to play in their lives as the society dictates as standards and acceptable behavior. The roles do not have strict and rigid boundaries as people can have various roles that show flexibility. People can take charge of their lives and choose particular roles to play. Play is important in socialization and building of the personalities of people as personalities affect the roles that people play. In terms of personality traits, the gender is also affected. Nowadays the availability of television programs and video games are widely used by people for information and relaxation. Such popular media affect the roles of women as the

Health Care Informatics Implication for Advanced Practice Nursing Essay

Health Care Informatics Implication for Advanced Practice Nursing - Essay Example Typically, the foundation of a CIS is the electronic medical record or computerized patient record, which is a digital record of the care delivery episode. Building on this electronic record, a comprehensive clinical information system also incorporates computerized order entry and results reporting, as well as integration with information systems in the laboratory, radiology and other diagnostic services, and the pharmacy. A CIS frequently also includes elements of expert systems that perform quality functions such as alerting physicians to potential drug interactions or dose errors. The CIS also provides for data collection and analysis for administrative and quality processes. All nurses have a role in informatics because nurses are primarily responsible for maintaining patients' records and helping doctors and their supervisors by providing relative information about the patients under their care. That is why nurses must embrace the clinical information system to facilitate and improve patients' healthcare related issues. Most of the time nurses practice informatics without prerequisite education. However, it is the need of time that all nurses must be fully aware of the healthcare informatics and well conversant with the use of computers software and equipments so they put their full potencies to facilitate timely delivery of healthcare to the much needing patients under their direct supervision. ... r this may be the lack of understanding on the part of nurses about how they can utilize information technology to improve the patient care services and how they can save time and generate vitally useful information in shortest time span. Nursing Informatics Nursing informatics is composed of theory and skills and it is a combination of nursing science, information science, and computers in which a nurse stands in the forefront duly supported by informatics and computers (Figure 1). According to the American Nurses Association (ANA), nursing informatics is "a specialty that integrates nursing science, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data, information, and knowledge in nursing practice . . . to support patients, nurses, and other providers in their decision-making . . . using information structures, information processes and information technology" (ANA, 2001, p. 46). FIGURE 1: The relationship of information technology, computer science and nursing. The main purpose of nursing informatics is to improve the health of individuals, families, and communities. This can be done by optimizing the management and communication of information to enhance the availability of patients' medical history and medicine records, promptly responding to any emergency and utilizing information system to deliver in time service to the healthcare management and patients. In this direction, computers can be used to manage and communicate data, information, and knowledge. It is very important that nurses are able to interpret data, utilize the information generated through the collection of data and put their knowledge to make the data meaningful and helpful for timely decision-making process which would enhance the healthcare services. Critique article Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Critique - Article Example t, 2000, p.783) The author begins with the conceptual analysis of the resistance to change and describes the process of eventual alteration in employee responses. He presents a summary of different literature on this issue with an approach to critique. It finally talks in favor of a bottom up process of evaluating the responses instead of presenting a simple generalization of the concept. For the purpose of reaching his point the author presents certain concepts and categorizations relevant to the issue. The author introduces the concept of ‘resistance to change’ as, â€Å"critical theorists and labor policy scholars argue that the interests of managers should not be privileged over the interests of workers† (Piderit, 2000, p.783). This simplification of the concept overlooks the complex analyses of the responses from the workers. This also overrules the positive intentions behind some negative responses. Complementing this view Pasmore points out that a resistance is actually a product of interaction or communication between the two agents involved in the change process. He also echoes Piderit’s view that a change need not be a ‘bad’ thing. The agent implementing the change should therefore go back to the background and the objectives of the change process rather than simply trying to overcome the resistance (Pasmore, p.214). In this context the role of leadership is worth mentioning. Resistance has to be worked through or managed by the lead ers in the ideal manner (Markham, 1999, p.16). Power and Eastman (1997) brings up the role of transformational leadership in bringing about organizational change and determining the course along which the change might occur. Transformation leadership can help in implementing change through articulation of the vision adopted by the leader, the followers or subordinates accepting this vision and an analogy stuck between the interests of the followers and the vision projected before them. The role of leadership in

The Problem-Solution Speech Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

The Problem-Solution Speech - Essay Example It is true that beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder but then again beauty is also dependent heavily on the person who is being looked at – as to how he or she presents his or her own self towards the appreciating individual (Author Unknown, 2011). Beauty surely is skin deep as the world has come to this notion after much thought and consideration. The problem here is how beauty has gained so much significance that it is seen as the most aspired characteristic of the personality that one talks about (Czarniawska, 2011). The problem thus seems to bother the best of us, and even you and me, which is nothing but a quagmire for all and sundry. Similarly, facial looks and sexiness of the body does not actually count towards what we know as beauty. My dear ladies and gentlemen I need to tell you that beauty is more within than being outside. It is comprised of thinking ideologies than facial cuts and dimples. This is indeed true because beauty within any person is difficult to judge since it is hidden deep down inside. I believe that beauty could be judged by this person’s actions, behaviors and talks (Holbrook, 2005). He or she could be written off as an ugly person if he or she does not know how to talk to people, how to interact with them and how to be considerate towards their issues. The solution is that beauty is just present because the beholder believes it so. There would be no beauty if he knows that the face of the body cuts are for a certain period of time, and would vanish away quickly. Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to suggest that beauty must not be looked inside people with an exterior eye alone. It needs to be based on past events, present understanding of matters and how things would shape up within the future. Beauty comprises of all these tangents to be called as beauty in essence (Anastasia, 2010). I would like to end my speech by making a point here. Beauty of face and body could vanish with

Adapting to Workplace Changes in Professionalism Essay - 1

Adapting to Workplace Changes in Professionalism - Essay Example 432). This is because the meaning of culture is said to represent different ethnic, tribal and racial groups leaving the part that addresses how the unique norms, values and beliefs influence the usage of the law or the attributes of the lawyers and the unique traits they share in law practice (Bracey, 2006). In 1975, Lawrence Friedman devised ‘legal culture’ as a concept that emphasized the notion that law is more implicit when described as a product of social forces, a system and a conduct of the same social forces. Friedman moves from the common notion that focuses on law as a set of rules and norms which can either be written or unwritten about the rights and duties of people as well as prescribing the right or wrong behavior, to advocate for a model or a ‘system’ which has a set of processes inputs and structures that send outputs to the environment. The legal culture is based on three components which are; the legal and social forces, the ‘law’ itself such as the rules and the structure, and the effects the law has on the outside world. As such, the legal culture essentially covers the social study of law (Rosen, 2006). The unique attributes shared by the legal practitioners across the globe can be traced to the traditional study of law. Initially, the social scientific study of law was mostly marginalized in universities in America in departments such as social science and law schools. However, the notion of legal culture was introduced by working with a tradition that had little connection to the American universities but some lawyers and jurists from parts of Europe such as Germany. For instance, a German jurist described the practice of law as a manifestation of the ‘spirit of the people’ and described it as an evolving culture. Though describing it from a pragmatic and rather romantic perspective, an American jurist known as Oliver Wendell Holmes also described law as a culture by referring to it as an anthropologic document

Celebrating, not mourning provides comfory for the living Research Paper

Celebrating, not mourning provides comfory for the living - Research Paper Example It seems time to change our cultural values whose foundation lies upon untested theories that create lengthy and distressing models which ensue in more depression rather than alleviating it. In contrast, dia de los muertos or day of the dead celebrated in Mexico is an ideal model focused on reuniting and honouring beloved ancestors, family and friends. It was believed that life is only a dream and a human being was truly awake only after his death. Thereby, death was not deemed as a mysterious and fearful ending but a realistic familiar makeup, as much a part of life as life itself. The importance of this day can be judged from the fact that it constitutes a national holiday. Festivals are arranged to commemorate ancestors. Private altars are built decorated with sugar skulls, marigold flowers, favorite foods, beverages, possessions of the deceased. Thus, focus is placed on praying for the deceased and incurring their pleasure; the exact opposite of grief culture. So instead of blind ly following mourning and grieving rituals, we should adopt a more rational approach (Rambo, 2005). Celebration of mortality is not restricted to Mexico. Veneration and worship of ancestors is faithfully observed in many parts of the world. For instance, the Chinese believe that all bodily aspects are inherited from parents who continue to work for ones well-being until one is on a firm foothold. Therefore, it is imperative to pay homage to the deceased for their gracious deeds. They occupy the position of guardian angels for the living, protecting and steering their lives to the right path. It is imperative enough to form a part of ‘filial piety’ which is the most important of the eight earthly duties that Chinese must perform. Crying over a situation will not make it any better; but acceptance of loss and commemorating memories is an integral part of the healing process. Fulfillment of earthly duties can lead to inner satisfaction; moreover, showing venerating the dec eased would establish a feeling of closeness, as if they are watching over us. Many Catholics, Buddhists also practice ancestral rights in which they honor the memories of their ancestors usually on their death anniversaries. In India, Hindus frame the portraits of their deceased and decorate them with marigold flowers as opposed to western culture which involves decorating graves with flowers. In addition, Hindus make prayers and seek the guidance of their ancestors which sounds more sensible than shedding tears over stony graves. Similarly, ancestors have been exalted to the position of deities in many African countries. Veneration of ancestors is a cornerstone of various religions practiced there. It can be concluded that ancestral rites is one of the most unifying characteristic of different cultures and religions from east to west (Park, 2010). On the other hand, habits like grieving are disastrous because the real world will never change to fulfill our wishes so people stand t o lose even more because of continued mourning. As we cannot handle he thought of our own non-existence so it is no surprise why we fail to come to terms with the absence of our loved ones. The risk of indulging in drugs or alcohol to let out sorrow or reinforce denial accelerates

States Pursuing Empires Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

States Pursuing Empires - Essay Example political control by some political societies over the effective sovereignty of other political societies and that it can be achieved by force, by political collaboration, by economic, social or cultural dependence. (19) There are numerous reasons why states pursue empire-building. Economic motives however is the most applicable among these. The case of Western Europe, for instance, highlights this with the intensified political, economic, and military competition among rivals for resources, which by nature were scarce at any given time in any given place. (Deng 1999, p. 207) Here, European states and chartered companies such as the British East India Company and the Portuguese Estado da India, among others, sought new sources of wealth, which resulted to the sudden unleashing of market power, the spectacular growth in trade and the continuous expansion of overseas colonies. In addition, a number of great thinkers endorse empire-building as a means defending a country’s economic and political interests. Notoriously, even Karl Marx agreed in The Communist Manifesto that the gun is the best way to make the point when capitalism encountered â€Å"barbarians†. (Marx & Engels 1963) Machiavelli’s notion of necessita in his Discourse, also fundamentally supports empire building or the expansion of territories as necessary once its dominion had been extended beyond a certain scope. For him, it is important to expand – so much so that, as is well known, Machiavelli measures the quality of different possible constitutions for cities by how suitable they are to this end. (Bock, Skinner & Viroli 1990, 37) In his discussion of the Roman Empire, Machiavelli has argued that expansive government is pushed forward by the dialectic of the social and political forces of the Republic. There are those who criticize empire building including its modern version – imperialism. Hobson, for example, in Imperialism: A Study, wrote that empire-building denies many traditional

War At Sea Essay Example for Free

War At Sea Essay Throughout the war the British fleets were superior. This was probably due to its large empire. 1914 The first naval battle was on August 28 when the British raided Heligoland Bight. British destroyers entered this German naval base and fired torpedoes but the Germans sent out cruiser ships, which were bigger and stronger. The destroyers retreated to open sea whilst being chased by the Germans and shot at by Battle ships. In September, submarine warfare began when German submarine U-9, sank 3 British cruisers. Meanwhile, 3 British cruisers pursued 3 rival cruisers to the coast of Chile where on November 1st, the Battle of Coronel took place. The Germans sunk 2 British cruisers without loosing 1 ship. When they heard of this the British Admiralty sent 2 more battle cruisers to sink the Germans, but they had gone to the Falkland Islands to raid a British wireless and coaling station. To their surprise they found a British squadron refuelling. The surprised, fleeing Germans were destroyed and 1,800 Germans died. In the Indian Ocean, the German ship Emden attacking small ports and sea-side villages (allies to the British) but later in the beginning of November was destroyed by an Australian cruiser. 1915 On January 23rd, a German squadron went to raid the English coast, but the English had been warned, and sent a fleet to meet them. They met at Dogger Bank and the Germans fled. The British were faster and sunk one cruiser and their 2 flagships were damaged. Because of a misunderstanding of signals, the British attack was not as full on as it should have been so the remaining German ships escaped. The reason the Americans got involved, was when the cruise liner Lusitania was torpedoed twice and sunk. 1,198 people died, 124 of them Americans. On August 19th, the British liner Arabic was lost and 4 more Americans died. 1916 The Battle of Jutland This was the only naval full-scale battle in World  War 1. Neither side was prepared to loose this battle. On the 31st of May, the British Grand Fleet saw the full High Seas Fleet 98 German ships sailing together. Both the British fleets advanced. David Beattys fleet took a parallel rout to the German ships and reached them first followed by Hugh Evan-Thomass squadron. They opened fire and Beatty lost the ships Indefatigable and Queen Mary and received several hits to his flagship Lion. Beatty retreated to Sir John Jellicoes main fleet. Both sides sustained many losses and took many casualties. That night when the main battle was over, the Germans tried to escape. They ran into the tail of a line of cruisers following Jellicoes southbound fleet. Once they were through the chaotic firing, sinkings and collisions of the night they went back to the Jade Anchorage. 1917 By 1917, Germany had built up its navy and because of this and unrestricted submarine warfare Britain almost had to pull out of the war at sea with their depleted navy. But they did not have to because Britain would of needed supplies, so some of the remaining ships of the British fleet joined with some American destroyers and escorted merchant ships to and from ports, whist destroying submarines. This was the convoy system. In February, March and April the Germans raided the English Channel, and in response, Britain raided Ostend and Zeebrugge several times. Later in the year, the British raided German coastal shipping in Holland and in November unsuccessfully raided German minesweeping operations in Heligoland Bight. In December the Germans raided several British-Scandinavian convoys. Britain lost many ships. 1918 German submarine warfare had been decreased by the allied convoy system, but it had not been stopped completely. Raids were sent to Ostend, Zeebrugge and Bruges (3 ports where submarines operated) but were not very successful. 2 more German ships Battle cruiser Goeben and light cruiser Breslau were attacked in the Aegean Sea. Breslau was sunk and Goeben was badly damaged. In March, the Germans made a large attack and this pushed back the Allies, but later in the year they retaliated and conquered the German navy, this won them and ended the war at sea.
